Badminton > Fairuzizuan-Zakry upset home favourites

TOP Malaysian shuttlers Lee Chong Wei, Wong Mew Choo, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui easily sailed through to the second round of the China Open Badminton yesterday. However, Mohd Fairuzizuan Ta- zari-Mohd Zakry Latif notched the biggest upset of the day when they defeated home favourites and tournament second seeds Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun 21-15, 18-21, 21-17.The world No 19 Malaysian duo will face world No 39 Shen Ye-He Hanbin of China in the second round today.Malaysia’s top pair of Kien Keat-Boon Heong lived up to their top billing by overcoming Al bertus Susanto Njoto-Yohan Hadikusumo Wiratama of Hong Kong 21-19, 21-12 and will face Tsai Chia Hsin-Hu Chung Hsien of Taiwan for a slot in the quarter-finals.Seasoned campaigners Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah thrashed Howard Bach-Malaythong Khan Bob of the United States of Ame- rica 21-7, 21-10 and will meet qualifiers Liu Xiaolong-Li Tian of China in the second round.

Venezuela defeats Bolivia 5-3 in World Cup soccer qualifier

AN CRISTOBAL, Venezuela - Giancarlo Maldonado scored twice to lift Venezuela to a 5-3 victory over Bolivia on Wednesday in a World Cup qualifying match. Maldonado, of Mexico's Atlante, put Venezuela ahead for the first time when he put a header over Arias in the 89th minute. He then made it 5-3. Martin Martins gave Bolivia a 1-0 lead at 19 minutes off a lost ball in the middle of the field. Venezuela tied it a minute later with a pass from Jorge Rojas to Daniel Arismendi, who sent a shot to the left post. Juan Carlos Arce put the Bolivians up again in the 27th minute, and Arismendi got Venezuela even again at 2 in the 40th minute. Martins put Bolivia ahead 3-2, but Alejandro Guerra's goal in the 82nd minute forged the third tie of the game.
